I hope you enjoy it, remember to always be safe with your multimeter! These tips will make your job measuring a whole lot easier, and it might even teach you a few functions of a multimeter that you didn’t know you could do!
Tip 1: Top 9 Must-Have Functions For Your Multimeter:
- Auto-Off Function: An auto-off function is an extremely simple but also extremely handy. This function automatically turns off your multimeter when there has been a lack of input by the user for a certain amount of time. This is extremely handy on a job site so you don’t run out of battery during the middle of your job.
- Auto-Ranging: Auto-ranging helps to eliminate confusion when you are testing two different and separate circuits which might be confusing.
- Min/Max/Average Features: This helps to capture the minimum, maximum and average inputs of nearly any current or circuit that you are testing. Incredibly useful when you are looking for specific data points when testing.
- Hold Button: A hold button is a button you can press that freezes your screen and “holds” the data on your screen for you to look at or record which is incredibly useful.
- Frequency & Duty: This records the percentage of time a digital signal is on over a specific period of time.
- Bar Graphs and Tables: Multimeters that feature graphs and tables are incredibly useful and allow the multimeter to display data from your tests in an easy to use and easy to read format.
- Diode Testing Capabilities: Not all multimeters can test diodes. If you know you are dealing with diodes and need the ability to test their capabilities, then make sure your tester can accomplish this!
- Safety Rating: If you are dealing with high powered currents, then you need to double check your safety rating. If you are dealing with volts over 1000, then you will need a CAT III rated tester.
- True RMS: True RMS testers or Clamp Multimeters is a type of tester that can accurately measure both sinusoidal and non-sinsusodial AC waveforms. If you need to be able to test these type of AC waveforms, then make sure you have a true RMS tester!
